How embracing gratitude during life’s smallest tasks rewired my brain, lifted my mood, and reshaped the way I see the world.
It was the end of a long day. I was tired, the kind of tired that makes even the simplest tasks feel like mountains. But the garden needed tending—the leaves were scattered, and it couldn’t wait. So, with broom in hand and a half-hearted sigh, I headed outside.
At first, I swept with a subtle grumble in my heart. But then, something shifted.
A Slow Shift Toward Stillness
As the evening deepened and the sky began to dim, I found myself slowing down—not just physically, but mentally. The act of sweeping became rhythmic, almost meditative. A soft breeze kissed my face. The subtle scent of blooming flowers filled the air. The ordinary task I had dreaded slowly transformed into something quite beautiful. That’s when the outdoor string lights blinked on. They shimmered gently in the tree branches like golden stars. And in that same moment, I looked toward the house. Warm light glowed through our living room window, framed perfectly by garden trees. Inside, I could hear laughter—my wife and son, safe and joyful.
I quickly grabbed my phone and snapped a photo. I’m so glad I did.

A Moment That Changed Everything
That single image captured more than just a peaceful garden or a glowing window. It captured a mindset shift—one that hit me deeply. Suddenly, I no longer felt like I had to sweep the garden.
I felt like I got to.
I was blessed with a garden to care for, a home to tend, a family to love, blessed enough to be there in that very moment to experience it all. That moment, with all its simplicity, became sacred. I stood there, broom in hand, flooded with gratitude. I thanked God for the life He’s given me—not perfect, but full of love, peace, and beautiful moments like this.
From Snapshot to Book Cover
The moment struck me so powerfully that I knew I had to do more than just save a photo. I illustrated it—pouring all the emotion and gratitude into the art. That image became the cover of my book, Beauty is all Around which is a short, illustrated, poetic book all about finding the extraordinary in the ordinary. I couldn’t think of a more fitting symbol.
The Takeaway: A Simple Shift That Changes Everything
We all have “garden chores” in our lives—tasks that feel like burdens. But what if we viewed them as blessings instead? What if we start embracing gratitude in our daily life?
What if we shifted from:
- “I have to clean the house”
to - “I get to care for the place I call home”?
From:
- “I have to cook dinner”
to - “I get to nourish the people I love”?
That simple shift—from obligation to appreciation—is where gratitude lives. And that’s where joy begins.
And it’s not only based on my experience. Research shows that practicing gratitude regularly can improve overall well-being and mental health, as highlighted in
